I Got Served!

My publicist at Flux sent word to me of a review of Epoch in The Globe and Mail. Naturally this got me very excited, so I followed the link and read the review...

Ouch. Not only did the reviewer say the book was "wooden", he subtly accused me of being a racist. Never saw that one coming. I got served, big time.

You can find the review here.

There's no such thing as bad publicity, but still...

  1. And how many novels has he published? Thought so. Take solace in the fact that you even have a published novel to criticize. I dream of the day when I get a negative review--because that means I'm legit! Non-friends and family are reading me!

Okay, so much for the positive spin. Show him up and get writing. Channel the emotion into something positive...

  3. I have to pay to read the negative review! Hiss boo.

My roommate once told me that I made the angel Gabriel caucasian in a story I'd written about the Annunciation, because I said the angel's face was "fair." Then, I read Zora Neal Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God (I think that was the book), and the word "fair" was used for an African-American character to mean beautiful. So there. What did the reviewer think was racist?
